Life that once was full of unconditional love and friendship may suddenly seem very empty

The loss of a much loved pet, whether this is by death or enforced separation can be a sad and tough experience.  Life that once was full of unconditional love and friendship may suddenly seem very empty. In owning a pet, sooner or later we have to make a decision and to act in their best interests concerning the end of their life.  Unfortunately our pets have much shorter life spans than us and when illness or injury or old age affects their quality of life we may need to think about letting them go peacefully. Euthanasia offers a painless way of ending our pet’s life.

In the case of children or young people, the death of a family pet may be the first time that they will experience death and the emotions of loss.  This may mean that they will feel extremely sad and lonely. The normal emotions of feeling numbness, disbelief and denial may be commonly felt.  There is sometimes anger or guilt for something they did or said that may make a young person think that they have contributed to the death in some way.  It is important that any young person deals with the loss in a good way as this may well lay the basis for how they deal with and cope with losses in later life.

Pet memorial – you may wish to remember a pet in a special and enduring way with a photograph or by writing a few lines or a poem.

Our pets have a special place as our companion and member of our family.

This can be a time of mixed and often raw emotions both leading up to and following the death of your pet.  Our pets have a special place as our companion and member of our family. It is commonplace to feel the same intense feelings of grief and loss as one would for a human loss. Feelings of guilt and numbness are normal and understandable.  Others may feel a sense of calm and also relief that their beloved is no longer suffering.
